I have been trying to think about what type of character I should use for my development project as the possibilities are only restricted by my imagination. However I feel this is more about me learning the study of design and structure created for animation, and that can be learnt through even the most simplistic of characters. So I think it is important for me not to get too carried away with a complex character design as this will cause me unnecessary work and distract me from the key lessons to be learnt about designing characters for animation.
The key example that Mary suggested was to use a simple rabbit character. This is because they move far more simplistic than other quadrupeds, due to the way they move, keeping both set of legs moving together in a 'twinning' motion. Making it more like a two legged animal from the side rather than four.
I have included an example below, found on Gemma Wharton's blogspot:

However I am someone who likes to challenge myself and so I have decided to stick with the theme of an animal, but to try and design a character based around my dog called Skye so that I will have to focus on more traditional quadruped locomotion and movement.
